World Teachers’ Day 2021 – Teachers at the heart of education recovery

Internationally, throughout October 2021 we celebrate World Teachers’ Day. In Australia, World Teachers’ Day 2021 will be celebrated on Friday 29 October 2021.

The celebration commemorates the adoption of the ILO/ UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers in 1966.  In 1997 the 1966 Recommendation was also adopted to cover teachers in higher education.

The ILO/ UNESCO joint message for 2021 is:

"On World Teachers’ Day, we are not only celebrating every teacher. We are calling on countries to invest in them and prioritize them in global education recovery efforts so that every learner has access to a qualified and supported teacher. Let’s stand with our teachers!"

Over 18 months into the COVID-19 pandemic, World Teachers’ Day 2021 will focus on the theme – Teachers at the heart of education recovery. Events will be held to highlight policy responses and steps to ensure that teachers develop their full potential at this time.
